The next posts will be a game of recalling what has happended over the past week, as I am behind.
Day 1 was July 31, 2014. That was last thursday. I left early in the morning to meet Billy and Houma where he lives. The drive was about 5 to 6 hours and along the way I stopped at a Piggly Wiggly in Lafayette to pick up groceries. However, the Piggly Wiggly was not the best place to go as it turned out that it was quite sketchy and some of the food was already expired. Afterward, I grabbed lunch at a Checkers burger joint and I had the pleasure of enjoying what must have been the world's smallest burger.
Soon, I arrived at Billy's apartment. He left me a key so that I could go inside and take a nap on his couch. Once Billy got off work, he packed up his stuff and we quickly left for the New Orleans airport. After he dropped his car off at the airport, he hopped in my truck and we drove towards Lake Guntersville, Alabama. Along the way we stopped at a Huddle House where we had dinner. While we were there, Billy ordered a Dr Pepper. When the waitress said that he should drink Coke instead, Billy jokingly said that Coke was made with baby tears. Little did he know that this joke would come back to haunt us.
For nearly the entire time we were at the restaurant, one of the waitresses kept telling us that she was imagining a whole room of babies crying and Coke employees bottling the tears. Finally, she let the baby tears comment go... only to begin speculating about making Coke with puppy and kitten tears. When the other waitress informed us that she used to be a baby model for Coke, it only made matters worse.
Eventually we left the Huddle House and we continued on our drive. About 2 AM, we arrived in Guntersville, AL. We drove through the small town and found a vacant parking lot near the water. We pulled off there to sleep in the bed of the truck for the night. Unfortunately, the world's most annoying flock of geese and ducks also decided to stay in the same area. Billy questioned whether this might be a duck habitat and then immediately affirmed it as they got louder and more annoying. We were forced to listen to the birds squaking all night. I think Billy got a couple hours of sleep but I slept maybe 20 minutes. When the geese and ducks would settle down, the wind would rid the silence by slapping a cable against an aluminum flag pole. So much for getting some rest before a long day of fishing.
